Getting

  • In nature, the mineral occurs hellieryte - NiCO 3 • 6H 2 O.
  • Heating nickel chloride with calcium carbonate in a sealed ampoule:
NiCl2+CaCO3→150oCNiCO3+CaCl2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {NiCl_ {2} + CaCO_ {3} \ {\ xrightarrow {150 ^ {o} C}} \ NiCO_ {3} + CaCl_ {2}}}}
  • Effect on a solution of nickel chloride with a solution of sodium bicarbonate saturated with carbon dioxide :
NiCl2+2NaHCO3→140oCNiCO3+2NaCl+CO2+H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {NiCl_ {2} + 2NaHCO_ {3} \ {\ xrightarrow {140 ^ {o} C}} \ NiCO_ {3} + 2NaCl + CO_ {2} + H_ {2} O}}}

Physical Properties

Nickel (II) carbonate forms yellow or green crystals of trigonal syngony , space group R 3 c , cell parameters a = 0.4597 nm, c = 1.4725 nm, Z = 6.

Not soluble in water. Forms crystalline hydrates of the composition NiCO 3 • n H 2 O, where n = 3, 6.

At temperatures below 22.2 ° C it goes into the antiferromagnetic state.

Chemical Properties

  • Decomposes on heating:
NiCO3→300oCNiO+CO2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {NiCO_ {3} \ {\ xrightarrow {300 ^ {o} C}} \ NiO + CO_ {2}}}}

Application

  • In the ceramic industry as a pigment.
