About the album

Walker and Ross leaving Panic! At The Disco violated the songwriting regimen, after which Uri tried to find his own style of voice and confidence in order to take on the role of the main songwriter of the group. The texts touch on the subject of manipulation and confusion. It took two years for the Vices & Virtues album to see the light and incorporate new musical experiments.

After the release, he received mixed but generally positive reviews. Critics praised the diversity of musical styles, but critics condemned Uri's compositional simplicity and verbose lyricism. Anticipated by the main single, “The Ballad of Mona Lisa,” the album debuted from seventh position on the Billboard 200, spreading 56,000 copies in its first week.

Music and Lyrics

Vices & Virtues features a variety of musical styles in the tracks. According to Uri, each song is “different from the next.” At the beginning, the group had no idea how to play music and what to write lyrics. However, after returning to the studio and restarting production, the group began to write again from the second attempt. "We've been working on music for about a year and a half, so I think that partly explains why some of the songs are so different in style," Smith said. Over time, the duo chose the best songs from 30 written. Uri talked about the most exciting part of the process: “... you get all the work done, record a song, compose it, and then you can add some fun things, small pieces of voice, strange conversations and instruments that you have not used before.” The field of experiments stretched to such an extent that the group used the iPad to record synthesizers. The team began working with the French group Plastiscines, and a children's choir on the track Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met ...)

Most of the band’s previous material was written by former guitarist Ryan Ross. At Vices & Virtues, Uri assumed this responsibility, although he did not have much experience in the past. The biggest inspiration for the lyrics was the desire to continue, not bother and write songs. Uri considers his texts to be very honest and direct, as well as fantastic with narrative elements.
