Biography

Born in the family of a Huguenot merchant, later his father Louis Michelet (1775–1841) became the owner of a silk factory.

After graduating from the French gymnasium, in 1819 he entered the law faculty of the University of Berlin . He listened to a lecture course by F. Savigny , then studied the philosophy of religion and theology under the guidance of Schleiermacher , the logic and philosophy of Hegel's law .

In 1822, he passed the first state exam, then wrote a dissertation on Hegel, which he presented in 1824. After graduating from the university, from 1825 to 1850 Michelet worked as a teacher in a French gymnasium.

Since 1829 - an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Berlin, he worked in this post until 1874.

He was a member of the "Society of Hegel's Friends", which from 1832 to 1845. published the complete works of Hegel, and from 1860 to 1866 he was editor of the journal Der Gedanke .

In 1843 he founded the Philosophical Society in Berlin.

Scientific activity

Hegel's faithful disciple and representative of the left side of Hegelianism, Michelet was distinguished by his progressive, political and church liberalism , reaching radicalism .

His lectures contributed to the dissemination of Hegel's ideas of philosophy in the first half of the 19th century. Among the students of Michelet was A. Tseshkovsky . Michelet collected and restored, on the basis of Hegel's lecture notes and handwritten notes, his lectures on the history of philosophy and prepared them for printing.
