The iron crown of Lombardy is the crown of the Kingdom of Lombard (existed in 568-774), consisting of a 3- inch- wide golden hoop , covered with precious stones , inside which a narrow iron hoop is placed.
This iron ring, according to legend, dating back no further than the time of Charlemagne , was originally a nail from the Savior's cross , donated by Pope Gregory the Great to the Princess of Langobard Theodelinda , who ordered him to be made into a crown for the coronation of her husband Agilulf (593) (see also Votive Corona ) .
Since then, the crown has been deposited in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Monza , near Milan , where it is located to this day. After the independent Lombard kings, she crowned most of the German emperors , from Charlemagne to Charles V.
In 1805, after the formation of the Italian kingdom , Napoleon I was crowned with the Iron Crown, and in 1838, the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I as king of Lombardo-Venetian .
