Aland Islands population

Ålands indbyggertal population - the dynamics of the population and composition of the Åland Islands related to the island type according to which growth indicators are noted in increasing the proportion of people of retirement and pre-retirement age, reducing the proportion of children, as well as reducing fertility and mortality, which as a result gives a low natural increase of only 0.3 ppm.

Population size

As of August 31, 2012, the population of the Åland Islands was 28,534 people, and the average density was 18.27 people / km². More than 11 thousand people live in the main city of the autonomous province - Mariehamn . In addition, about 50 thousand people from the archipelago live in Sweden , Finland , and Norway .

The share of women in the structure of the population is 51%. The Evangelical Lutheran Church owns 94.8% of the population.

In 2005, children under 15 made up 17.3% of the population, from 15 to 64 years - 65.9%, over 65 years old - 16.8%.

Language

Out of 28 983 inhabitants of the Aland Islands (12/31/2015), 25 527 inhabitants (88.08%) use the Swedish language, 1,363 inhabitants (4.70%) use Finnish, 2,093 inhabitants (7.22%) use other languages.

Ethnic composition

The majority of the population of the Åland Islands are ethnic Swedes (92%). In this regard, the Swedish language has been given the status of a state language . The descendants of Finnish fishermen make up 5% of the population (in the commune of Brando, the proportion of Finnish-speaking citizens is 9%).

Unemployment

The unemployment rate in 2009 was 5.4%, which is lower than prevailing in Finland (8.2%), but in the years preceding the crisis, the unemployment rate fluctuated around 1-2%.
