Professional career
Orlando made his debut on December 15, 2000 in a fight with boxer Alfredo Valdez in Puerto Rico. Cruz did not have a single defeat in battles until 2009 , when he was defeated by technical knockout from boxer Cornelius Loka.
The 31-year-old has become the first open homosexual in boxing history. “ “ I have always been and always will be a proud Puerto Rican and proud gay , ”said O. Cruz in an interview with the Associated Press . “ I matured physically and mentally for such an important step in my life and my profession. I took into account the fact that this will have its pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages, especially in a sport for macho, like boxing, ”the athlete explained. Cruz added that he had consulted psychologists before coming out . According to him, relatives, as well as the coach and manager support the decision of the boxer.
In 2010, he lost by knockout in the third round to the Mexican, Daniel Ponce De Leon .
