East house

East Cowes is a city in the north of the Isle of Wight in the south of England , on the right bank of the Medina River when it flows into the The Solent Strait. The population is 6 166 people [1] .

In 1798, the construction of the castle began in East Caus. The castle was built by architect John Nash and used by him as his own residence. It was finally demolished by 1960 [2] [3] .

In the city from 1929 to 1964, the aircraft manufacturer Saunders-Roe was located. The company created the Saunders-Roe Princess seaplane [4] , the Black Arrow booster rocket [5] and others.

The successor to Saunders-Roe, the British Hovercraft Corporation, was based in the city from 1966 to 1984 and was engaged in the production of hovercraft .

Cowes Floating Bridge Car Ferry

Red Funnel's car ferry connects East House to Southampton [6] . The company uses the MV Red Eagle , MV Red Falcon, and MV Red Osprey vessels along this route.

The Cowes Floating Bridge ( Caus - East Caus) chain car ferry transports about one and a half million passengers and four hundred thousand vehicles annually via Medina [7] .

Regular bus routes No. 4 (East Cow - Whippingham - Ryde ) and No. 5 ( Newport - Whippingham - East Caus) from Southern Vectis connect East Caus with the two largest cities on the Isle of Wight [8] .

Politics and Power

In parliamentary elections, East House is part of the Isle of Wight constituency.

In the city there is a fire station "A03 - East Cowes" of the rescue service of the Isle of Wight [9] .

Osborne House

Norris Castle in the north-eastern part of the city on the banks of the Te Solent Strait was built in 1799 [10] .

In the eastern part of the city is the Osborne House Palace, built by Queen Victoria and her husband Albert as a summer, seaside residence in 1845-1851. Since 1921 it has been a public museum [11] .

Through the city and along the entire coast of the Isle of Wight is the Isle of Wight Coastal Path [12] .

The East Cowes Victoria Athletic AFC Football Club is in the First Division of the Wessex League, the tenth level in the English football league system [13] .

Famous residents

  • John Nash is an architect, the largest representative of the British Empire.
  • Henry Frederick Ponsonby - aristocrat, military leader and politician, court of the royal court, personal secretary of Queen Victoria (1870–1895). Major General. Member of the Privy Council of Great Britain.
