Archdiocese of N'Djamena

The Archdiocese of N'Djamena ( Latin: Archidioecesis Ndiamenana , French: Archidiocèse de Ndjamena ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in the city of N'Djamena , Chad . The N'Djamena Archdiocese extends its jurisdiction to the regions of Shari-Bagirmi , Hajer-Lamis , Lak , Bahr al-Ghazal , Kanem , Borku and Tibesti . The metropolitanate of N'Djamena includes the dioceses of Doba , Gore , Lai , Mundu , Pala , Sarha . The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of N'Djamena is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city of N'Djamena.

History

On January 9, 1947, Pope Pius XII issued the bull “Quo evangelizationis” , which he established the Apostolic Prefecture of Fort Lamy, separating from the Apostolic Prefecture of Berberati (today - the Diocese of Berberati ) and the Apostolic Vicariates of Fumban (today - the Diocese of Nongtamba (today) Archdiocese of Khartoum ).

On May 17, 1951, the Apostolic Prefecture of Fort Lamy transferred part of its territory for the construction of the Apostolic Prefecture of Moundou (today, the Diocese of Moundou ).

On September 14, 1955, Pope Pius XII issued the bull Dum tantis , which transformed the apostolic prefecture of Fort Lamy into a diocese.

On December 22, 1961, Pope John XXIII issued the bull “Regnum Dei” , which transferred part of the territory of the Diocese of Fort Lamy for the construction of the Diocese of Fort Arshambolt (today the Diocese of the Sarch ) and at the same time elevated the diocese of Fort Lamy to the rank of archdiocese. On October 15, 1973, the Fort Lamy Archdiocese was renamed the Archdiocese of N'Djamena.

On December 1, 2001, the Archdiocese of N'Djamena transferred part of its territory for the construction of the new Apostolic Vicariate of Mongo .
