Agnes French

Agnes (Agnes) of France (circa 1260 - December 19, 1327 ) is the youngest daughter of Louis IX and Margarita of Provence . She was regent of Burgundy with her young son.

Family

Agnes was the youngest of eleven children, eight of whom survived into adulthood. In 1279, she married Robert II, Duke of Burgundy , and became the mother of eight children:

  • Blanca (1288–1348), married to Edward, Earl of Savoy .
  • Margarita (1290–1315), married to King Louis X.
  • Jeanne (circa 1290–1348), married to Philip VI .
  • Hugo V (Duke of Burgundy) (1294–1315).
  • Ed IV (Duke of Burgundy) (1295–1350).
  • Louis , king of Thessaloniki (1297–1316), married to Matilda Enot .
  • Mary (1298–1336) married to Edward I, Earl of Bara
  • Robert, Count of Tonner (1302–1334), is married to Jeanne, Tonner’s heiress.

Two children died at a young age: Jean (1279 † 1283) and Margarita (1285).

After the death of her husband, Agnes was regent with her young son, Hugo, from 1306 to 1311. She died in Côte d'Or on December 19 or 20, 1327, and is buried in the Abbey de Sito. [one]

Agnes French in popular culture

Agnes French is one of the minor characters in the series of historical novels “ Cursed Kings ” by the French writer Maurice Druon . Mentioned in all novels, but appears on the scene only once at the end of the novel "It’s Wrong to Spin the Lilies."
