On September 29, 1996, one of the Russian border outposts of the Kalai-Khumb border detachment was subjected to heavy shelling from both Afghan and Tajik territories. The Stovba’s crew flew to the aid of the besieged outpost, which, in addition to him, included Lieutenant Colonel Sergey Lipovoy, Captain Igor Buday and Lieutenant Colonel Yuri Stavitsky. When the helicopter began shelling the fighters, they responded with fire from heavy machine guns, inflicting severe damage. Stovba, who was sitting at the machine gun, noticed a flash among the stones and opened fire. He managed to suppress the enemy firing point, but Stovba himself was killed. Budai was also killed in the battle, but the remaining crew members managed to detect the leading shelling of the outpost by the battery and destroy it with the help of a helicopter link. Then Lipova and Stavitsky hardly brought the helicopter to the airfield. He was buried in the village of Rakhia [1] .
