State Security Lieutenant - a special rank of officers of the commanding staff of the NKVD and the NKGB of the USSR in the period 1935-1945 (except for military personnel of the NKVD and employees of the Workers 'and Peasants' Militia of the NKVD of the USSR ). The lower special rank is junior lieutenant of state security , the next in rank is senior lieutenant of state security .
The special rank of state security lieutenant (1 rectangle [the so-called "sleeper"] in the buttonholes of the sample 1937-1943 ) in this period conditionally corresponded to the military rank captain of the Red Army , after 1943 - conditionally corresponded to the military rank of lieutenant .

Rank History
The special rank of state security lieutenant was introduced by Decrees of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR No. 20 and SNK of the USSR No. 2256 of October 7, 1935 , [1] announced by Order of the NKVD of the USSR No. 319 of October 10, 1935 [2] for the commanding staff of the GUGB NKVD of the USSR .
By a decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces of February 9, 1943 , introducing special ranks of employees of the NKVD bodies similar to combined arms, the rank of lieutenant of state security was transferred to the category of special ranks of the middle commanding officers, and conditionally equated to the military rank of lieutenant of the Red Army (before that, it conditionally corresponded to the military rank senior commanders of the Red Army - captain ).
By a decree of the Presidium of the USSR Armed Forces of July 6, 1945 , [3] introducing military ranks for officers of the NKVD and NKGB of the USSR similar to combined arms, the rank of lieutenant of state security was abolished.
