Khan Sheikhun [1] ( Arabic: خان شيخون ) is a city in the north-west of Syria , located on the territory of Idlib governorate. It is part of the Maarret-en-Nuuman area .

Geographical position
The city is located in the southern part of the governorate, at an altitude of 349 meters above sea level [2] . Aleppo - Hama motorway passes through the city.
Khan Sheikhun is located approximately 52 kilometers south of Idlib , the provincial capital, and 210 kilometers north-northeast (NNE) from Damascus , the country's capital. Nearest civilian airport located in the city of Latakia [2] .

Syrian Civil War
During the Syrian civil war, Khan Sheikhun was mainly controlled by the Sunni Islamist group Jebhat Fatah al-Sham (al-Nusra).
On April 4, 2017, a chemical weapon incident took place in the city, which killed at least 89 people.
