Biography

Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts . He graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb . Music lessons were taken by y. F. Dugan and B. Rosenberg-Ruzhich in Zagreb . For several years he worked as a lawyer . In 1945-1948 he was a musicologist at the Ethnographic Museum, in 1948-1964 he was a researcher, in 1948-1952 he was the director of the Institute of Folk Art, in 1948-1967 he was a professor at the Academy of Music in Zagreb , where he taught a course in musical folklore.

Zhganets is one of the largest Yugoslav folklorists . A participant in many ethnographic expeditions, he recorded about 15,000 folk tunes of Medjimurje and other regions of Yugoslavia , as well as parts of Austria and Hungary , in which the connection with the culture and folklore of Medjimurje is especially noticeable. The author of books, many articles devoted to Yugoslav musical folklore, are distinguished by the originality of the scientific analysis of intonation and structural features of the folk melodies recorded by him, and also processed many folk songs for various vocal and instrumental compositions.
