Content
History
The first attempt to establish a university in Uruguay was made on June 11, 1833 , when, on the initiative of the scientist and Senator Damaso Antonio Larraniaga , a law was passed on the establishment of the university. The creation of nine faculties was envisaged. By 1836, the faculties of Latin, philosophy, mathematics, theology and law were formed.
On May 27, 1838, Uruguayan President Manuel Oribe signed a decree establishing the Great Republican University. The decree had no noticeable consequences due to general political instability in Uruguay at that time.
