Career
Until 1967, Monseret performed in junior races, the next 3 seasons - in amateur. Three times in a row he became the 2nd in the group race of the amateur championship of Belgium. In 1967 and 1968, Jean-Pierre was among the winners of the national championship pursuit team race . At the Olympics in Mexico City, he became the 6th in a group road race. The Belgian won the silver medal of the 1969 World Cup in the same discipline, and a few days later signed a professional contract with Flandria . A month later, Monseret won the monumental classic Giro di Lombardy .
The only full professional season for Jean-Pierre was 1970. On the track, he won the national championship in Omnium and, paired with Patrick Serke , Six days of Ghent . In the Belgian highway championship, he became 3rd after Eddie Merckx and Herman van Springel , after which he made his way to the national team for the World Cup in Leicester . Like a year earlier in the amateur championship, Monsere and Leif Mortensen won the victory; this time the Belgian won. In October, Jean-Pierre and Serques won the national championship in Madison . In February 1971, Monseret won his last race, the Vuelta of Andalusia .
On March 15, 1971, Monsere started on the Grotto Fairmarket in Reti . Due to the poor organization of the race, a car got on the route, which its driver tried to park. When approaching him at a speed of about 45 km / h, Monseret looked down, and therefore did not notice the car and crashed into it. The rider died of pain shock. In March 1976, his 7-year-old son Giovanni died in the same way, after a collision on a bicycle with a car. That bike along with a rainbow T-shirt gave him Freddie Martens for First Communion . Six months after the death of Giovanni Martens for the first time became the world champion. Jean-Pierre Monseret and Martens are considered canonical examples of the “curse of the rainbow T-shirt”: after the second victory at the World Championships, Martens no longer won significant races.
