(162173) Ryugu is a typical near-Earth asteroid from the Apollo group . Belongs to the dark spectral class C and has an elongated orbit, because of which, in the process of its movement around the Sun, it crosses not only the Earth orbit, but also Mars .

Discovery and research
The asteroid was discovered on May 10, 1999 as part of the LINEAR project at Socorro Observatory ( USA ) and received the provisional designation 1999 JU 3 . In October 2015, the asteroid received its official name - Ryugu ( Japanese リ ュ ウ グ ウ Ryūgū ) .
The name is taken from the Japanese tale of the fisherman Urasima Taro , who visited the magical underwater castle-palace Ryugu-jo - the residence of the ruler of the sea elements of the dragon Ryujin . From there, the fisherman brought home a mysterious paper box, presented to him by the daughter of a sea ruler. When choosing a name for the asteroid, it was considered that the plot of the fairy tale echoes the task of the Hayabusa-2 probe to deliver a sample of soil from the asteroid to Earth whose composition is unknown [3] .
The asteroid was chosen as the target for visiting the Japanese interplanetary station “ Hayabusa-2 ” in order to land and take a soil sample [4] . The diameter of the asteroid is estimated at 0.92 km , which is almost twice as large as that of the asteroid (25143) Itokawa , which in 2005 was visited by the predecessor of this mission, the Hayabusa probe [5] . The launch of the Hayabusa-2 probe took place on December 3, 2014 from Tanegashima Cosmodrome [6] . On July 7, 2018, the probe reached the asteroid.
On September 21, 2018, the first successful soft landing of robot modules on the surface of an asteroid was made in history [7] . The first shots were taken from the bouncing landing robot modules Rover-1A and Rover-1B [8] . Both modules were in the MINERVA II-1 container [9] [10] . The MASCOT landing module (developed by the German Aerospace Center) from the MINERVA II-2 container worked on the asteroid for more than 17 hours [11] . During this time, the module changed its location three times, successfully completed the planned studies of the composition of the soil and the properties of the asteroid, and transmitted the data to the orbiter [12] .
