Biography and scientific activities
Born on January 29, 1951 in the Poltava region . In 1972 he graduated from the Radiophysical Department of Kharkiv State University. V.N. Karazin and since that time has been working at the N.N. Bogolyubov Institute of Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Together with I.P. Yakimenko and Yu.L. Klimontovich, he developed a statistical theory of spatially bounded plasma-molecular systems, on the basis of which he studied the influence of the interaction of plasma and molecular subsystems on electromagnetic fluctuations in such systems.
He developed the theory of bremsstrahlung in plasma-molecular systems, which takes into account all possible scattering processes involving charged particles and molecules, as well as the scattering of electrons and molecules by collective fluctuations.
For a series of works on the statistical theory of plasma-molecular systems, together with co-authors he was awarded the KD Sinelnikov Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Together with A. G. Sitenko, he generalized the theory of fluctuations in a stable stationary plasma to the case of a turbulent plasma with diffuse-drift motions of a liquid type.
He is developing the kinetic theory of dusty plasma , deriving microscopic equations and a chain of Bogolyubov equations for such a plasma, which made it possible to explain a wide class of new physical phenomena. In particular, it was explained why the measured dust temperature in experiments can significantly exceed the temperature of the plasma environment.
He developed the theory of Brownian motion of dust particles using the Langevin equation with multiplicative noise. One of the results was the discovery of nontrivial dust particle velocity distributions in plasma and particles in ordinary colloids .
His studies made it possible to evaluate the effect of zonal flows formed in controlled thermonuclear fusion devices on diffusion coefficients in the case of saturated turbulence.
The works of A. G. Zagorodny on plasma physics were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (2005).
He has made many plenary lectures at prestigious conferences on plasma physics; he is a member of the program and organizational committees of international conferences in different countries. He was the chairman of the organizing committee of the International Congress on Plasma Physics (2004-2006). He is the author of more than 200 works, including the well-known monograph Statistical Theory of Plasma-Molecular Systems.
He devotes much effort to scientific and pedagogical work, is a professor at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv , was also a professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He leads a number of scientific councils and committees, supervises scientific programs, in particular, the State Target Scientific-Technical Program for the Introduction and Application of Grid Technologies for 2009-2013. For a long time he was a member of the scientific council of the State Fund for Fundamental Research of Ukraine.
As the new chairman of the Academician V. I. Vernadsky’s Commission on the Scientific Heritage of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (replaced Academician K. M. Sytnik in this position), he initiated a large program of preparation for the 150th anniversary of the great scientist, in particular, the publication of a multi-volume academic collection of his works. He is the chairman of the program committee and organizing committee of the XXV Kiev international symposium on science of science and the history of science "V.I. Vernadsky’s creative heritage in the study of science and its organization: from the past through the present to the future" (Ukraine, Kiev, October 18-19, 2012 ) [one]
In 2011, he was elected a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences [2] , in 2012 - a foreign corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. [3]
