History

Plate of the Museum of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Icons

The museum is located on the ground floor of the Greek community building (Scoletta di San Nicolò), built in the 17th century. The building design belongs to Longen, Baldassar . It housed a hospital for the poor Greeks from 1678 until the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1959, the Greek Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice opened a museum of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, which was renovated in 1999.

A large number of icons of manuscripts and embroidered with gold decorations belonging to the former archbishops of Philadelphia, as well as small utensils with great historical and artistic value, are also exhibited here. The collection is composed of gifts from members of the Greek community and other individuals of the Orthodox faith; many icons were brought to Venice by refugees from the territories occupied by the Turks, others were painted by the Greek icon painters of Venice. Of particular interest are the works of artists such as Mikhail Damaskin , Georgios Klondzas, Emmanuel Lombardos, Theodoros Pulakis and Emmanuel Canes . There are samples of the Cretan school of icon painting, there are also works in the style of Constantinople of the Paleologian era, such as the Virgin Mary with the Child, the Apostles and Saints and the icon of Christ Pantocrator brought from Constantinople and donated to the community by Anna Notara (daughter of Luke Notaras , the last Great Duke of the Byzantine Empire [1 ] ).
