Agosti, Orlando Ramon

Orlando Ramon Agosti ( Spanish: Orlando Ramón Agosti ; August 22, 1924 , San Andres de Giles , Buenos Aires Province - October 7, 1997 , Buenos Aires ) - Argentinean military and statesman, professional military. He was a member of the ruling military junta in 1976 - 1981 .

Biography

Born in a family of Italian immigrants. He entered the military aviation school in 1944 and graduated in 1947 with honors. In 1951, he took part in an unsuccessful coup attempt by Brigadier General Benhamin Menendez against the reign of Juan Domingo Peron . He was deported to Montevideo, then worked in diplomatic missions in the United States and the Inter-American Defense Council in the framework of the Organization of American States .

On December 18, 1975, after the suppression of the military coup attempt, he was promoted to brigadier general and appointed commander of the Argentine Air Force .

As a result of the coup on March 24, 1976 , when President Isabel Peron , the widow of H. Peron , was overthrown , he joined the military junta along with Jorge Rafael Videla and Admiral Emilio Eduardo Massero . He was involved in government actions, especially in illegal repressions , noticeably less than other members of the junta. January 26, 1979 was dismissed.

In 1985, he was charged with 88 murders, 581 unlawful arrests, 278 cases of torture (seven of which resulted in death), 110 aggravated thefts and 11 abductions of minors. In December of that year, he was convicted of 8 cases of torture and robbery and sentenced to 4.5 years in prison. Following the appeal, the Supreme Court reduced the sentence to three years and nine months. He was released from prison on May 9, 1989 . In 1990, pardoned by President Carlos Menem .

He was married to Elba Esther Bokardo, had two sons.

Died of cancer in 1997 at an aviation hospital in Buenos Aires .
