Hieroglyphics of Empress U

Fragment of a stele with inscriptions made by the empress.

Hieroglyphics of Empress Wu , zetian hieroglyphs ( Chinese trad. 則 天 文字 , ex. 则 天 文字 , pinyin : zétiān wénzì , pall .: Zetian wenzi ) - Chinese characters introduced into use by the only Chinese authorities that ruled the emperor. The signs themselves were created by a court official named in December 689. The number of hieroglyphs in different sources varies from 12 to 30. Hieroglyphs were forcibly introduced during the reign of U, immediately after her death they became obsolete (thus, by their use documents can be dated).

Several characters introduced by U are preserved in the form of variant characters .

She was one of the few empresses in the history of China, she carried out many reforms during her reign, in particular, changed the rules of the costume and introduced new written signs. Strictly speaking, they were not invented from scratch; parts of earlier hieroglyphs were present in them.
