Biography

Grigory Gaponov was born on April 4, 1909 in the village of Konstantinovka (now - a city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine ). He graduated from three classes of elementary school, after which he worked as a machinist in a mine car. During the occupation of the Stalin Region by German troops, Gaponov was a member of a detachment of underground guerrillas . In February 1943, after his release, Gaponov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. By December 1944, Sergeant Grigory Gaponov commanded a platoon of the 453rd Infantry Regiment of the 78th Infantry Division of the 27th Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front [1] .

During the offensive battles, Gaponov skillfully directed the actions of his platoon. He was one of the first to cross the Tisza River. He mastered sniper skills. By the beginning of December 1944, he had destroyed 130 enemy soldiers and officers [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “exemplary performance of the command missions at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown”, Sergeant Grigory Gaponov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal " Under the number 4967 [1] .

In total, during his participation in the hostilities, Gaponov destroyed 163 soldiers and 23 enemy officers. In 1946, he was demobilized. He worked at the mine. He died on May 29, 1974 [1] .

He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
