Biography

Born in the city of Lodz, Petrikov province , in a Jewish family [2] [3] . After graduating from the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute, he began working as an assistant driver for a locomotive on the Moscow-Kiev-Voronezh railway , where he was soon promoted to a machinist, and then an engineer. In addition, he lectured at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute .

In 1909, Lipets became the head of the traction service of the Tashkent railway . From 1905 to 1913, Lipets, together with Professor Yu. V. Lomonosov , who was his teacher, developed a project for a diesel locomotive of direct action , that is, with the transfer of energy from a diesel engine to driving wheels, similar to steam locomotives. For this diesel locomotive, Alphonse Ilich developed a special pneumatic friction clutch, which is why behind the scenes he became the author of the entire project. Because the war began soon, the project was not completed until the end, but many of the ideas it contained were later implemented in many of the first diesel locomotives. Along with Lomonosov, Alfons Lipets became part of the Russian Railway Mission with the United States and participated in the development of projects for future locomotives of the E series .

In 1916, he made a significant change in the structural design of these locomotives (instead of flat fireboxes he used radial ones), and therefore the modified locomotives, at the direction of Lomonosov, received an index L (EL) in honor of Lipets. In 1922, Alfons, together with Lomonosov, joined the group engaged in the construction of the first Soviet diesel locomotives in Germany . After their completion, Alphonse Ilich Lypets did not return to the already Soviet Russia and remained in exile in the United States [4] [5] . He was buried in the Ferncliffe cemetery next to his wife Basil Lypets (nee Karp, 1883–1955) [6] .

His daughter Rena Lipets (1913–1996) was married to folklorist and photographer John Niles [7] .
