Murat ( tour: Murat Nehri , Murad, East Euphrates, Aratsani - armenian Արածանի ) - a river flowing along the Armenian plateau in Turkey , the most important tributary of the Euphrates .

Murat originates in the mountains of eastern Turkey near Mount Ararat and flows through the long and narrow valley of the Armenian Highlands. The length of the river is 722 km, the basin area is about 40 thousand km². The water level fluctuates greatly, rising in the spring flood (in April-May) and remaining low the rest of the time. The river is not navigable, it freezes in sections in winter. The height of the source is 3060 m above sea level.
Place in History
In 68 BC e. On the shore of Aratsani, a battle took place between the Armenian army under the command of Tigran the Great and the Roman army. At the time of the adoption of Christianity in Armenia as the state religion in the waters of Aratsani, King Trdat III was baptized with the army and population. [one]
Farm
In 1974, in the lower reaches of the river, near the confluence of Murat into the Euphrates , the largest dam in Turkey , Keban, was built and a large reservoir of the same name was formed. A power station is operating on the dam, and water from the reservoir is used for irrigation.
