Biography

Magomed Gamzatov was born on May 5, 1910 in the village of Megeb (now the Gunib district of Dagestan ) into a peasant family. By nationality Avar [1] . He graduated from the 7th grade of a junior high school, in 1932 - two-year cooperative courses. In 1932, Gamzatov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1935 he graduated from the Ordzhonikidze Infantry School, in 1936 - the Transcaucasian Combined Military School . Since October 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. He participated in battles on the North Caucasus Front , was twice seriously wounded and shell-shocked . By November 1943, Major Magomed Gamzatov commanded a battalion of the 6th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 2nd Guards Rifle Division of the 56th Army of the North Caucasus Front. He distinguished himself during the liberation of Crimea [1] .

On the night of November 2–3, 1943, a battalion of Gamzatov plunged onto ships and sailed 80 kilometers through the Kerch Strait in a storm. When the battalion landed on the Kerch Peninsula in the vicinity of the village of Gleiki , Gamzatov deployed it on a captured bridgehead and the next day knocked out enemy troops from the village of Mayak (now the village of Podmayachny within the boundaries of Kerch) [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 17, 1943, Major Magomed Gamzatov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal for “exemplary performance of command missions of the command in the Kerch-Eltigen operation and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard. " No. 2166. He was also awarded four orders of the Red Banner , two orders of the Red Star , as well as a number of medals [1] .

He finished the war in East Prussia as a regiment commander. He continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1956, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, Gamzatov was sacked. He lived in the city of Kalinin (now Tver ), was engaged in public work.

He died on September 5, 1976 [1] .

Memory

In the homeland of Gamzatov, his bust was installed and a school was named after him [1] .

The hero’s namesake, the poet Rasul Gamzatov, dedicated the poem “My brother’s namesake” to him [2] .
