Policy

The constitution of the United Provinces of Central America adopted in November 1824 abolished slavery, guaranteed freedom of the press, and abolished feudal titles. Legislative power was vested in a bicameral parliament; At the head of the federation was the president.

In 1830, liberal Francisco Morasan was elected president of the United Provinces, pursuing an active anti-clerical policy. Against Morasan, conservatives spoke out, unleashed a civil war, which led to the collapse of the federation. Attempts later to rebuild the United Provinces of Central America were unsuccessful.

The liberals of the United Provinces had great hopes for a federal republic that would develop into a modern democratic state, having made a fortune in the transit of goods between the Atlantic and the Pacific. This aspiration is reflected in the symbols of the federation: the white stripe on the flag symbolizes the land between two oceans; the coat of arms was five mountains (one from each state) between two oceans, crowned by a Phrygian cap - a symbol of the French Revolution .

Union collapse

Declaration of Independence

The state ceased to exist during the civil war of 1838-1840. The collapse began with the separation from the Federation of Nicaragua on November 5, 1838. Following separated Honduras , Costa Rica and Guatemala . The state of Los Altos was divided between Mexico and Guatemala. The union finally broke up in 1840, when the last stronghold of the Federation - El Salvador - on March 31 announced the decision to abolish the Central American Federation [1] .

In the XIX century, several attempts were made to restore the union, but none of them became successful for a long time.

  • The first attempt in 1842.
  • The second attempt in 1852.
  • The third attempt in 1896-1898, when the Great Republic of Central America existed - the union of Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
  • The fourth (final) attempt is between June 1921 and January 1922.

The colors of the flags of the countries formed on the territory of the Federation of Central America remind us of the flag of the United Provinces of Central America:
