Margaret Rhea Seddon ( born 1947 ) is a NASA astronaut . She completed three space shuttle flights as a specialist on the STS-51D (1985, Discovery ), the STS-40 (1991, Columbia ), and the STS-58 (1993, Columbia ), a doctor .

Birth and Education
Born on November 8, 1947 in the city of Murfreesboro, Tennessee , in the same place she graduated from high school in 1965. In 1970, she graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and received a bachelor 's degree in humanities in physiology . In 1973, she received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine [1] .
Before flying
After completing the internship, she worked as an emergency room physician in various hospitals in Mississippi and Tennessee . Conducted medical research on radiation therapy for cancer patients. For three years, she worked in the residency of general surgery in Memphis , and studied the impact on the effectiveness of treatment of patients ’nutrition structure before surgery [2] .
Space Training
January 16, 1978 enrolled in the NASA astronaut squad during the 8th set. She completed the General Space Training Course (OKP) and in August 1979 was enrolled in the Department of Astronauts as a flight specialist. She worked in various positions, was a surgeon of the rescue team, was a member of the STS-6 support crew , was a member of the NASA aerospace medicine advisory board, worked as an assistant director of the flight crew operations department on payload issues during Space Shuttle / Mir operations, was an operator communication with the crew .
Space Flight
- The first flight - STS-51D [3] , the Shuttle Discovery . From April 12 to April 19, 1985 as a flight specialist. The flight duration was 6 days 23 hours 56 minutes [4] .
- The second flight is STS-40 [5] , the shuttle Columbia . From June 5 to June 14, 1991 as a flight specialist. The flight duration was 9 days 2 hours 15 minutes [6] .
- The third flight is STS-58 [7] , the shuttle Columbia . From October 18 to November 1, 1993 as a flight specialist. The flight duration was 14 days 0 hours 14 minutes [8] .
The total duration of space flights is 30 days 2 hours 25 minutes.
After flying
In September 1996, NASA was sent to the medical faculty of Vanderbilt University in Nashville , Tennessee . She participated in the preparation of cardiovascular experiments , which were carried out during a flight under the Neurolab program in 1998. After leaving NASA, she worked as head physician at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.

Awarded: Medal "For Space Flight" (1985, 1991 and 1993).
Family
Husband - Robert Lee Gibson , NASA astronaut . They have four children. Hobbies: gardening, running, tennis, sailing and reading.
