On August 11, the XXX World Cup opened in festive performances in the small town of France, Moulins. Despite the fact that the UIPMB Congress made a decision the day before that the maximum number of participants should not exceed 68 people, 70 pentathletes were allowed to compete. The Federation of Australia, which filed the application last, insisted that the continent be represented by the team in full force. France took pentathletes for the third time. In 1970 and 1972, the world championships among juniors were held here, in which the French team won prizes. This time, few doubted that the team of men strengthened by the “native walls” would delight their fans with the sparkle of precious metals of the championship. There were good reasons for this. Until now, the national team steadily entered the top six, and won bronze medals at the Olympics in Mexico City and Los Angeles, as well as at three world championships.

The French team includes two winners of the last championship J. Buzou and D. Boubet, as well as C. Rue, who showed good results in regional competitions and in the tournament for the World Cup in San Antonio in March 1987.

  • The USSR team arrived in Moulins without their long-term leader Anatoly Starostin , who was disqualified for 2 years for using illegal drugs at the 1986 World Cup. The composition of the national team in the selection system was as follows: the 1985 world champions in the team classification - Igor Schwartz , Anatoly Avdeev and the 1983 world champion in the team Aleksey Khaplanov , the reserve was the silver medalist of the world junior championship Alexander Makeev .

Just before the start, the team’s head coach Valery Pudenkov decided to give young Makeev a chance to speak and the team started as follows: I. Schwartz, A. Avdeev and A. Makeev.

This time Hungary was represented by world champion A. Mizer, three times awarded the silver medal of the world championships in the team classification L. Fabian , as well as progressing from start to start J. Martinek, who replaced the bronze medalist of the last championship L. Dobi at the qualifying starts. Among the participants are world champion C. Massullo (Italy), as well as Pfelps (Great Britain), M. Kadlec (Czechoslovakia), who have declared themselves in full voice and are ready to give a surprise to the national teams of Sweden and Poland.

Jumping

The owners of the championship complicated the show jumping with several insidious obstacles, but they were not the subject of excitement and concern for athletes and coaches, but the uneven composition of horses — from well-trained, perfectly coping with the task under the most inexperienced rider to stubborn and uncontrollable. This meant that the results will largely depend on the fortune-draw. This time she turned away from the Hungarian team. Miklos Šalang in his report from the World Cup described the difficult competition of his compatriots, who showed unprecedented low results. Mijer is the world champion, the best rider of the team “brought” 722 points, Martinek, twice awarded a silver medal at the world championship among juniors, –749, and only Fabian managed to show 980 points with great effort. The horses, according to the reporter, literally went on strike on the field, not wanting to obey. Soviet athletes were more successful. Avdeev, who received a zero mark at the last championship, now allowed only one fall and “brought” 1070 points, Makeev, having 5 falls, –938. The third issue of the Schwartz team, which was difficult to ride and brought a lot of disappointments, this time surpassed itself and received a maximum score of 1,100 points. In addition to it, the route Kosunen (Finland) and Rasmusson (Sweden) were unmistakably overcome. But the winner of the race was Georges, a little-known pentathlete from Romania, who showed the best time of the day.

Fencing

The second day - a fencing marathon, which lasted 15 hours. From the very first rounds, the Hungarians chose an offensive tactic of force pressure on the opponent due to a wide arsenal of technical, tactical techniques and homework. Fabian is magnificent on the track, his rivals are literally demoralized by his irresistible attacks, against which they have no opposition. He scored 48 victories, gaining 1128 points. Martinek (904) and Mijer (872 points) supported their leader with dignity, ensuring a team victory in this form. Nine wins less from the Frenchman Buzou, who received 1080 points and took 2nd place. The third result - 36 victories and 1048 points for the Soviet athlete Schwartz. Avdeev and Makeev fenced weaker, but overall the USSR team won 2nd place and led the tournament. After the fencing, the French and Italians moved into the leading group.

Swimming

Swimming finally determined the applicants for prizes. The strongest here were the British - 3820 points before Poland — 3776, Hungary — 3740, USSR — 3712, Italy — 3704 and France — 3632 points. The best personal result in the pool was shown by the Italian Toraldo Zmin 11.08s — 1314 points. The second was the Englishman Brockhaus, the third was the Frenchman Rue, then Chizhovich (Poland), Avdeev (USSR) and Gostigan (USA). After three species, Fabian (Hungary) was the leader, followed by Schwartz (USSR), Buzu (France), Avdeev (USSR), Chizovic (Poland) and Rasmusson (Sweden). In the team event, the USSR national team remained in 1st place, followed by the teams from Poland, Great Britain, and France. Hungarians from 19th place after the show jumping moved to 8th.

Shooting

In shooting, the heroes of the day were Mijer and Swede Danielson, winner of the shooting of the last championship, who showed 199–1110 points each. A serious breakdown occurred in Fabian, the leader of three days. Nerves could not stand the emotional load that fell on his shoulders. He knocked out 186 points, equal to 824 credits, and significantly complicated his life in a dispute over the championship title. Below their capabilities shot Soviet athletes. Schwartz, after two successful types of the program, had real chances to encroach on the highest award, but could not control his nerves, and knocked out just 179 (670 points) and crossed out this opportunity. In general, the Soviet team showed the 9th result (Avdeev — 912, Makeev — 1022 points). The shooting team was defeated by Sweden, in second place Hungary, in third Bahrain. According to the results of four days, Buzu became the leader with a total of 4240 points, Fabian was inferior to him 20 points, Avdeev took the third place - 4170 points. In the team standings before the final run, the Soviet team lost the lead to the Swedish team, ahead of the French, Hungarian, Italian and Czechoslovak national teams.

Running

Running in the 30-degree heat was a new challenge for pentathletes. Buzu had a slight advantage over Fabian and Avdeev, a little more over Kadlets and Massullo. But they are all excellent cross-countrymen, so the question of the winner remained open. The Swedish team was ahead of the USSR national teams by 79, France by 251, Hungary by 256 and the UK by 435 points. In this situation, the incredible happened. The winner in running was an athlete from Czechoslovakia Kadlec - 12min 37.79s. The second and third results were shown by the Hungarians Mijer and Martinek — 12min 42s and 12min 51s. Fabian ran for 13min 08s. With this finish spurt, the Hungarians won the run — 3732 points and became world champions in the team event. Fabian, after an annoying loss in show jumping, failure to shoot, still managed to rise to the third step of the podium. The situation was dramatic for the French athletes who fought courageously, but could not keep the team in the top three. Rue, who began to run at an incredibly fast pace, lost consciousness 100 meters before the finish; when he woke up, he continued to creep to the finish almost creepingly, but fell again. He was put on a stretcher to provide first aid, but he did not give up, jumped up and still finished. The team lost a lot, but the athlete’s action was appreciated. The consolation of the French was the finish Buzu, who did not miss his chance and with a total of 5462 points became the world champion. The silver award went to the Czechoslovak pentathlete Kadlec, who was fifth in 1985. The team with his participation three times was one of the six strongest teams in the world.

Soviet athletes in run took 4th place, losing in this exercise to the Hungarians, the British and Italians. Avdeev showed the 8th time — 13.01.39, Makeev 15th — 13.15.18, Schwartz 26th — 13.36.33. In the individual championship Avdeev - 5th place, Schwartz - 11th and Makeev took 13th place.

Team Tournament Results

The first place went to the Hungarian team with a total of −15 739 points. With a total of 15703 points, the USSR team won silver medals. Due to the strong run, the British team took 3rd place, on the 4th team in Italy, on the 5th Czechoslovakia, on the 6th Poland. The result of the French athlete Rue was canceled for outside help while running. As a result, the team was in 10th place.

  3.   Great Britain - 15,491
  4.   Italy - 15,453

10.   France

Only 36 points the Soviet pentathletes lost to the Hungarian national team. As the saying goes, after a fight, they wave their fists. But here we can recall the fact that the strong-willed decision of the head coach did not put Alexey Khaplanov on the team, an experienced pentathlete in technical forms (jumping, fencing) could help the team.
