Biography

A. I. Galich (Govorov) was born in 1783 in Trubchevsk ( Oryol province ) in the family of a deacon. In 1793 - 1803 he studied at the Sevsk Theological Seminary. Then he entered the St. Petersburg Teachers' Seminary, which in 1804 was transformed into the Main Pedagogical Institute. Here he changed his last name to “Galich” (before that, he had already once changed his last name from “Govorov” to “Nikiforov”). In 1808, he continued his studies at German universities in Helmstedt and Gottingen ). In 1813 he defended his thesis at the Department of Philosophy of the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute. In the years 1814-1818, Galich taught at Petrishula , at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum and the Pedagogical Institute. In 1819, the Main Pedagogical Institute was transformed into St. Petersburg University , in which Galich was the first representative of the philosophical department.

In the years 1818-1819. Galich published in two volumes The History of Philosophical Systems, compiled on the basis of the German works of Sacher, Ast , Tenneman and other German philosophers. The work ends with a presentation of Schelling's philosophical system.

In 1821, the trustee of the educational district Runich against Galich was charged with godlessness and revolutionary intentions. Galich was put on trial at a university court along with three other professors at St. Petersburg University on charges of spreading ideas that were contrary to the spirit of Christianity and that were destructive of public order and welfare. Galich's books were banned for use in teaching at the university and withdrawn from use [4] .

In 1837 he was dismissed from St. Petersburg University, accused of free thought, but retained the salary of an extra-ordinary professor and a government apartment. Soon, the reform of the university in 1837 deprives him of these livelihoods. However, in the same 1837 he received the position of head of the archive at the Provincial Department. Despite the failures that befell him, Galich continues to work and publish his works. His "Lexicon of Philosophical Subjects" (1845) - becomes one of the first philosophical reference books in Russia.

The most significant in terms of volume and significance of the issues raised were his two last works: “Universal Law” and “Philosophy of the History of Mankind”. However, failure did not leave Galich - as soon as he managed to finish his work, as in his absence, an accidental fire completely destroyed many years of work. Unable to survive this loss, Galich fell ill and died in 1848 .
