Biography
Born June 22, 1956 in the small Kurdish city of Amuda in northwestern Syria. He received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Damascus , then worked as a professor at the University of Libya for 3 years. In 1994, Abdel left for Sweden , where he switched to the study of ancient civilizations.
Abdel Basset has been an active participant in the Kurdish movement of Syria, which has raised several rebellions against the Assad regime in recent decades. Kurds, representing about 9% of Syria’s 23 million people, complain of constant discrimination and demand recognition of their culture and language.
In June 2012, he took the post of chairman of the Syrian National Council , replacing Burkhan Galyun . Abdel Seyda noted that his predecessor coped well with his duties, but the organization itself made a number of serious mistakes in the fight against the Bashar al-Assad regime.
