The VIII World Congress of Esperantists was held on August 11-18, 1912 in Krakow ( Austria-Hungary , now in Poland ), 946 Esperantists from 28 countries took part in it. [1] . In accordance with the decision of the previous World Congress, everyone could participate in the congress, having paid the registration fee and observing the rules of the congress, but only selected authorized delegates ( Esper. Rajtigitaj delegitoj ) from groups and organizations of Esperantists had the right to vote. This order was maintained at the next, 9th World Congress.

Speaking at the congress, the creator of Esperanto L. Zamenhof announced his intention to move away from active participation in the Esperanto movement and focus on literary activity and the further development of homaranism . [2]

The cultural program of the congress included the presentation of plays in Esperanto, among which were “Mazepa” by Juliusz Slovacki , performed by the troupe of the Krakow City Theater, “The Bear” by A.P. Chekhov , performed by the amateur troupe Zamenhofa Artista Adeptaro led by Russian Esperantist Vasily Devyatin . In addition, the opera “Pebble” by S. Monyushko (libretto by V. Volsky) performed by the troupe of the Lviv Opera House was presented in Esperanto.
