Biography
Born September 18, 1954 in Tokyo . After graduating from high school in 1973, he continued his studies at Tokyo University , where in 1978 he became a bachelor, and in 1980 - a master of science in mechanical engineering. In 1983, Takao Doi defended his doctoral dissertation in aerospace engineering at the same university.
Since 1983, T. Doi has been working at the Japanese Space and Aeronautics Research Institute. In 1985, he moved to the National Space Agency (NASDA).
Space Training
On June 20, 1985, Takao Doi was selected among the three Japanese astronaut candidates of the first set. He was appointed as the understudy of the main payload specialist to the shuttle crew, which was preparing to fly according to the Japanese scientific program Spacelab J. The launch of the ship was planned for 1988 , but due to the Challenger disaster, it was postponed for several years.
In 1987-1988, T. Doi worked at the University of Colorado in a laboratory for the study of hydrodynamics in zero gravity.
In April 1990, he again began to prepare for a flight under the same program. The transferred flight STS-47 took place in September 1992. T. Doi duplicated in him his compatriot Mamoru Mori .
Since March 1995, for one year, he underwent retraining at the Space Center. L. Johnson . Upon completion of training, the qualification of a flight specialist was assigned, and an assignment was received to the department of transport systems and management of the astronaut department.
In November 1996, he was appointed flight specialist for the crew of the STS-87 mission.
Spaceflight
First Flight to Columbia (STS-87)
Takao Doi, 43, made his first flight on November 19 - December 5, 1997 on the Columbia spacecraft ( STS-87 ) as a flight specialist. The shuttle crew, which also included the Ukrainian astronaut , performed a large series of scientific experiments in the field of physics. Takao Doi, together with Winston Scott, made two EVAs . During the first exit on November 25, which lasted 7 hours 43 minutes, astronauts carried out a manual capture of the inoperative Spartan 201 platform satellite, and also tested the OTD cargo crane with a removable block and instruments for the ISS . During the second exit on December 3 (duration 4 hours 59 minutes), the astronauts continued testing the crane and tools, as well as launched and returned the remotely controlled Sprint satellite. This was the first entry into outer space by a citizen of Japan.
The flight duration of Columbia was 15 days 16 hours 35 minutes 1 s.
Flight operations
After his first flight, Takao Doi was assigned to the NASA's International Space Station Division. In preparation for the flight to the ISS in August - September 2002, a training cycle was held at the European Astronaut Center ( Cologne ).
In 2004, T. Doi received his doctorate in astronomy from Rice University .
In May 2006 he was included in the crew of the STS-123 mission.
Second Endeavor Flight (STS-123)
The second flight on the Shuttle Endeavor ( STS-123 ) Takao Doi made at the age of 53 years , March 11 - 27, 2008 , again as a flight specialist. The main task of the international crew was to deliver the first section of the Kibo Japanese orbital module to the ISS. On March 18, Takao Doi conducted a unique experiment aboard the station, throwing a boomerang in zero gravity [1] . The flight duration was 15 days 18 hours 10 minutes 52 seconds. It was one of the longest shuttle flights.
The total duration of two space flights of Takao Doi was 31 days 10 hours 45 minutes 53 seconds.

After starts
In 2009, T. Doi returned from NASA to the Japanese aerospace agency JAXA , but after two and a half months, on September 13, 2009 , he quit the astronaut squad, as he got a job at the UN apparatus in Vienna .
Since 2016 - professor at Kyoto University [3] .
