St. George's Cathedral (Ano Syros)

St. George’s Cathedral is a Catholic church located in the town of Ano Syros , island of Syros , Greece . The temple is the cathedral of the Diocese of Syros and Milos .

History

The church was built on a hilltop around 1200. The temple was rebuilt several times. In 1617 it was destroyed by the Turks. From 1652, the church became the cathedral of the Diocese of Syros and Milos. In 1834 it was rebuilt for the last time and since then has a modern look.

In the church are the icon of St. George and the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary " Panagias tis Elpidas ", having artistic and cultural value. The church also contains a portrait of Bishop Andreas Kargas, who was hanged by the Turks.
