Biography
The predecessor of Flabianico as a doge was expelled and fled to Constantinople . They tried to promote the Orseolo family to the post of a native of the family, hoping to establish a hereditary monarchy.
Domenico Flabianico was the leader of the opposition party. With the support of Emperor Conrad II , who wanted to destroy the strengthening of Byzantine influence on the Republic , Flabianico was elected a doge.
Under Flabianico, who was supported by a meeting of Venetian citizens, a constitution was developed that guaranteed the rule of a closed group of noble families. Two counselors were imposed on the Doge, so the further process of restricting the power of the Doge and reducing it to a nominal status began. These reforms were carried out under pressure from Europe, which wanted a stable and predictable government in one of the most important states of the Mediterranean.
The Doge’s rule was characterized by a cooling of relations between Byzantium and Venice, and despite the social tensions within the state and the struggle for power between the parties, it was a time of peace and stability.
