Biography
Edwin James was born in Vermont on August 27, 1797 . He was the youngest of thirteen children [1] .
In 1823, James published the two-volume Expedition to the Rocky Mountains, 1818–19 — a report on a study of what is now known as Pikes Peak [2] .
In 1829, he was appointed botanist, geologist and surgeon [1] on a research expedition [1] [2] .
In 1830, he wrote down in detail, according to the words of a white settler from Kentucky, John Tenner, his memories of life with the Indians of the Shawnee , Ottawa and Ojibwa , publishing them in New York under the title “The Story of the Abduction and Adventures of John Tenner during a Thirty Year Stay Among the Indians” / "Among the Indians of Thirty Years of Residence" among the Indians "(Thirty years among the Indians").
Edwin was an environmentalist and an early advocate of civil rights for Native Africans and African Americans [2] .
Edwin James died at Burlington on October 28, 1861 .
