Description
The lake has the shape of an oval with dimensions of approximately 19 by 8 kilometers; located at an altitude of 1208 meters above sea level. It feeds on the river of the same name , there are no flowing rivers. Walker is one of the many remnants of the vast lake , which existed on this territory in the last ice age .
During studies of the lake, conducted, in particular, in connection with the location of the Yucca Mountain repository near it, it was found that since the end of the Pleistocene, Walker had dried up several times and again filled with water for no apparent reason.
The first people settled in the vicinity of the lake about 11,000 years ago, the indigenous population of the region is the northern payute .
From the 19th century, the main river feeding the lake was actively used for irrigation, and from 1882 to 2010, the Walker level dropped by about 53 meters [4] . In this connection, naturally, its volume decreases and the salinity and concentration of life-threatening substances in the lake increases. By 2004, only and fish remained from the fauna in appreciable quantities. In this regard, since 2009, the Loon Festival, held here for a long time, has been canceled in a nearby settlement of : birds stopped flying to the lake due to lack of food [5] .
The western part of the lake is a recreational zone [6] , in the same place passes the federal highway ; in the valley to the southeast of the lake is located (since 2003) the , one of the largest in the world [7] .
