Name Etymology

The name of the genus comes from the Greek. λύσις , lizis - “separation, dissolution”, and Greek. νώτος , notos - “back, back”, which, apparently, indicates a way to open the seed capsules.

Botanical Description

Epiphytic herbs or shrubs. The stems are branching, semi-gingival, glabrous. Leaves are opposite or collected in whorls of three, sometimes alternating, isophyllic or uneven in size, grassy or leathery, petioles short, lanceolate or elliptic laminae, pointed, angularly serrate on the edge. Inflorescences are axillary, on peduncles, with subtle bracts, little or multi-flowered. Sepals are actinomorphic , fused in the basal part, lanceolate. The corolla of the flower is zygomorphic tubular-funnel-shaped, the tube is straight, swollen in the upper part, the limb is bilobate, the adaxial lip is 2-lobed, shorter than the abaxial lip; abaxial lip 3-lobed, lobes equal or central lobe larger, rounded at the apex, reddish-purple, white, yellow. Stamens 2, usually equal in length to corolla; fused anthers . Ovary superior, single pistil , flattened spherical. The fruit is a 2- or 4-leaf elongated capsule much longer than the calyx. Seeds with a hairy outgrowth at the apical end, and an awl-shaped outgrowth at the root end.

Habitat and climatic conditions

Bhutan , Northern India , the southern islands of Japan , Laos , Myanmar , Nepal , Northern Thailand , Northern Vietnam ; 23 species live in China . It grows in mountain forests - on trees, on rocky slopes, by streams, at an altitude of 400-1700 meters above sea level.

Economic Significance and Application

In a temperate climate, it is grown as an indoor and greenhouse ornamental plant . Known cultivation in moss baskets. In warmer areas it is possible to apply as a container plant .

Agricultural Engineering

Landing. They are planted in a very loose, nutritious water and breathable substrate , for example, an earthen mixture for senpolia with the addition of perlite , chopped sphagnum and limestone crumbs. At the bottom of the pot, drainage from a layer of expanded clay or shards is necessarily arranged.

Care. Relatively unpretentious plant, grows well in a light, slightly shaded place. It should be protected from direct sunlight. Needs high humidity, you can spray the leaves. Watering is moderate, regular, be sure to avoid stagnation of water in the pan. The optimum temperature is 18-19 ° C. Regular top dressing during the growth period - in the spring and summer 1 time in 2 weeks, with liquid fertilizer for flowering plants 1/2 dose of the recommended on the package. It blooms from July to September. From late autumn to February, during low light conditions, reduce watering and do not fertilize, keep at 16-17 ° C, which contributes to the formation of flower buds.

Transfer. Transplanted annually in February into a fresh earthen substrate.

Reproduction. In spring - apical stem cuttings , which are rooted in a room greenhouse at a substrate temperature of 22-24 ° C.
