History
The land for the construction of the church was acquired by the Greek Catholic community in 1847. The project of the church was made by the German architect Leo von Klenze , who took as a basis the church of the Abbey of St. Boniface in Munich . The construction of the temple began in 1853 and was completed in 1865. The construction of the church was led by the Greek architect Lysandros Kavtanzoglu , who made some changes to the original design. The consecration of the temple took place on May 4, 1865 .
In 1877, Pope Pius IX declared the Cathedral of St. Dionysius the Areopagite a small basilica.
Architecture
The church was built in the form of a basilica and has a length of 38 meters, a width of 24 meters and 15 meters in height. The nave consists of twelve marble pillars of green marble brought from the island of Tinos . The eight windows of the church are decorated with frescoes depicting various saints. Four stained-glass windows on the right side depict Saint Amalia, Sixtus II , Telesphoros and Athanasius the Great . On the left side are the stained glass windows of St. Otto , Anter , Cletus and John Chrysostom . These murals are the work of the German artist Karl de Bouchet and were donated by the Bavarian king Ludwig of Bavaria .
In 1869, the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I visited Athens and donated a considerable sum of money to two marble departments, which are located to the left and to the right of the altar.
