He was born in Badia di Cantignano, in a large family consisting of his father, mother and six brothers.
The Piaggia family was poor and therefore, in order to survive, all members worked in the land or in the mill they owned.
Carlo received his first education from the parish priest of the village, was fond of reading books, but because of the economic conditions of his family, he had to abandon this passion in order to continue to work.
At the age of twenty-two, he lost his mother, three brothers due to cholera. Due to the serious economic problems the family was in, on May 1, 1851, he decided to leave Italy to work in Tunisia and Alexandria.
In 1851-1856 visited Tunisia , Alexandria , Khartoum . He joined Guillaume Lejean and traveled around Bar el Gatsal in 1860, and in 1863-1865. made his most important trip to the country of Niam Niam . In addition to his travels, he published in the Bolletino of the Italian Geographical Society: Dell 'arrivo fra i Niam-Niam e del soggiorno sul lago Tzana i Abissinia ”(Lucca, 1877).
