Life and work

Ivan Tabakovich was born in a family of Transylvanian Serbs. He received his art education at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts and then at the Royal Academy of Applied Arts in Zagreb. In Zagreb, the teacher I. Tabakovich was the artist Lyubo Babich . For two semesters, he also attended the Munich Academy of Arts and the private painting school of Hans Hoffmann in the capital of Bavaria. After graduating from the Zagreb Academy in 1924, he visited Paris in 1925. After returning to Zagreb in 1925 I. Tabakovich participated in the creation of the art group “Earth” (1929), then he created one of his most famous works - the painting “Genius”. The works of this “Zagreb period” (1925-1930) in Tabakovich’s work carried elements of a riddle, allegory and parable, were permeated with the spirit of expressionism.

In 1930, the artist arrived in Novi Sad ; his next period of creativity (1930-1938) passed here. Many of his works at this time are devoted to social issues. In addition, I. Tabakovich painted still lifes and landscapes, distinguished by virtuosity of details and refined paints. In 1937, his ceramic works were exhibited at the Paris World's Fair , where they won the Grand Prix.

In the years 1938-1977 I. Tabakovich lived and worked in Belgrade. This period of his is divided into two parts: 1938-1955 and 1955-1977. The works created by him in the first part of this are often of a poetic-melancholic nature, partly sarcastic and ironic. In the second - it is largely a modernist and postmodern painting, as well as sculpture, collages, art photography. In 1962, I. Tabakovich was awarded a gold medal at the International Ceramics Exhibition in Prague. He was a professor at the Belgrade Academy of Applied Arts. In 1965, the artist was admitted to the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts .
