For several years, Brown worked as a doctor in London , then traveled to the islands of the West Indies . From 1746 to 1755, Patrick lived in Jamaica , studied the flora of the island, and then returned to England.

March 10, 1756 published the first edition of Brown's book The civil and natural history of Jamaica . Illustrations for the book were made by George Eret . The book was reprinted in 1789 .

After the publication of the book on the nature and history of Jamaica, Patrick continued his exploration of the islands of the West Indies; around 1781 he again visited Antigua and Montserrat .
