The lyrics are about an obese woman from Tasmania named Rosie, with whom Bon Scott spent the night at the Freeway Gardens Motel in North Melbourne [1] . The beginning of the song refers to Rosie’s significant physical size (42 "—39" -56 ") and that her weight was nineteen stones (approximately 120 kilograms). However, on the Live from the Atlantic Studios album, Scott describes it as" ... Tasmanian the devil ... weighing 305 pounds ... "( English ... a Tasmanian devil ... weighs 305 pounds ... ), that is, about 138 kilograms. In addition to size, the performer also indicates that Rosie was the best lover with whom he had ever had to be. [2 ]
The band’s early recording, called “Dirty Eyes”, contains almost identical music, but different lyrics. This composition was officially released on the Volts album, as part of the Bonfire box set. In Dirty Eyes, the chord sequence in the chorus is somewhat modified, and the song itself is performed at a slower pace than Whole Lotta Rosie.
This composition was a success with fans and became one of the most famous songs of the group. Is one of the two (along with “ The Jack ”) included in all the official concert albums of the group. Included in the set list of almost all performances of the group. After the death of Bon Scott, the new vocalist Brian Johnson continued to perform the song at concerts (he performed this song at auditions that the band arranged to search for a new vocalist). During concert performances, the public usually chants "Angus!" While Angus Young loses the opening riff.
The video for the song was shot in 1978, during a band performance on the BBC , in the show “ Rock Goes to College ” and later entered the Family Jewels video collection.
During the contemporary concert performances of the song, the band uses a giant inflatable woman, called the band and “Rosie” fans. She can be seen on the Live at Donington video album. “Rosie” also got into the introductory video, which was played at the concerts of the group during the Black Ice World Tour .
