16 teams took part in the tournament: 2 host teams ( Germany and Switzerland ), 5 teams that received tickets to the results of the previous European Championship ( Serbia , Turkey , Italy , Poland and Russia ), 6 winners of the second round of the qualifying tournament ( Spain , Netherlands , Azerbaijan , Croatia , Belgium and Bulgaria ), as well as Belarus , the Czech Republic and France , who won the third round of qualification.

For the first time since 2001, the Russian national team became the champion of Russia , having won six victories in six matches played at the tournament. The Russian team, led by coach Yuri Marichev, who headed it in 2013, played in a very updated line-up - only Anna Matienko , Svetlana Kryuchkova , Natalia Obmochaeva and Tatyana Kosheleva performed at the Olympic Games in London, and for eight players the 2013 season was the debut in the official competitions of the national team Of Russia. On the eve of the championship and at the start of the tournament, the team was not spared trouble - in the final match of the Grand Prix, Irina Zaryazhko was injured, and in the first game with the Belarusians, Anna Matienko was eliminated due to a fracture of the little finger [1] .

In the quarterfinals, Russians in three games took revenge against the Turkish national team for defeat at the same stage of the previous European Championship , in the semifinal they also defeated EURO 2011 champions from Serbia [2] , and in the final in Berlin they broke the resistance of the German national team - 3 : 1 [3] . The most valuable player of the tournament was recognized Tatyana Kosheleva [4] .

The German team for the second time in a row became the silver medalist of the European Championship, and the Belgian team won bronze for the first time in history. In the match for third place, diagonal Belgian Lise van Hecke scored 35 points, setting a tournament record for player performance in a separate match.

The finalists of EURO 2013, the national teams of Russia and Germany, received the right to speak at the 2014 World Cup .
