Martin Shaw ( born Martin Shaw ; genus. January 21, 1945 , Birmingham , England ) - British theater, film and television actor. Known for his roles in the television series "Professionals", "Judge John Deed", " Inspector George Gently ." Winner of the theater prize " Drama Desk ".

Biography
Martin Shaw's childhood passed in the suburb of Birmingham - Erdington, where he lived up to 11 years, and then in Sutton-Caulfield [4] [5] . According to him, he first participated in an amateur play with his parents, Joe and Frank, at the age of three [6] . He has a younger brother - Jem (born 1952), a marketing consultant. His father was an engineer, his mother - a ballroom dancer. Martin attended the Great Barr School , one of his classmates was Steve Winwood [7] [8] .
In the classroom, Shaw succeeded in learning English literature and drama, and was fascinated by Shakespeare . At sixteen, he was offered a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Drama, but he refused it and began to look for work. For some time, the young man worked as a sales agent in a metalworking company, and also participated in the performances of the local theater troupe of the comedy del arte Pied Piper Players . In 1963, Shaw moved to London , deciding to continue his education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts [7] [8] [9] . During his studies he served as an assistant director in theaters - Queen's Theater (Hornchurch) and Bristol Old Vic .
Actor's career
Since the late 1960s, Shaw has played key roles in West End theater productions: Cliff Lewis in the list Look Back in Anger ( Royal Court / Criterion , 1968); Attilo in the play “Saturday, Sunday, Monday” ( National Theater , 1973); Stanley Kowalski [10] in the play “ A Streetcar Named Desire” on the stage of the Piccadilly Theater in 1974. Later, the actor noted that the role of Kowalski was a turning point in his career [11] .
In 1985, Shaw portrayed Elvis Presley in the music production Are You Lonesome Tonight? based on the play of the same name by Alan Blizdale [12] , which tells the story of the last few hours of the singer's life. The performance was in London, and then with a tour - in Sydney and Melbourne in Australia.
Since 1992, for several years, Martin Shaw played the role of Lord Goring in The Ideal Husband in the West End theaters and on Broadway , which as a result led him to the nomination for the American Tony Award and the Drama Desk award [13 ] .
Shoot on television The show began in 1967; The first noticeable work was participation in the TV show “ Coronation Street ”, where he played the hippie student Robert Croft. The actor became really popular among British television viewers after the crime serial “Professionals” appeared on ITV on 1977 [14] . Martin got the role of Ray Doyle, agent of the fictional service Criminal Intelligence 5 , as his partner and friend, Agent Body, was made by Lewis Collins [13] [15] . CI5 secret service under the leadership of George Cole ( Gordon Jackson ) was created by order of the Minister of the Interior to fight any kind of forceful measures against particularly dangerous crimes, such as terrorism, contract killings, racism, espionage. The series “Members of the clan” ( eng. Klansmen ) from the first season has never been shown on British broadcasting television due to censorship considerations [16] . The series had five seasons (total 57 episodes), the final episode was released in February 1983.
The show appeared in two biographical mini-series. In 1985, ITV released seven episodes of “ Last Place on Earth ” in which he played polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott [17] . After 11 years, he appeared as a South African politician and businessman, Cecil John Rhodes, in the eponymous eight-episode miniseries of the BBC , which was filmed in South Africa [18] [19] .
From 2001 to January 2007, the BBC One television series featured the series Judge John Deed starring Martin Shaw [13] [20] . In the six seasons of this procedural procedural drama , a variety of topical issues of social justice and morality, issues of medicine, environmental protection and the influence of man-made factors on health were considered. One of the episodes of the fifth season about the safety of vaccination ( MR vaccine ) was also canceled for broadcast on television due to its controversy [21] .
In the series of his other significant characters, also related to work in law enforcement , Chief Constable Alan Cade in the TV series Chef (ITV, 1993-1995) and police commander Adam Dalglish in the BBC adaptation of two novels by Phyllis Dorothy James (Death in the Spirit "And" Room of the murders "). From 2007 to 2017, Martin starred in the role of senior inspector George Gently in the same-name series [13] [22] [23] [24] .
In November-December 2008, the BBC showed a mystical mini-series about the exorcism of “The Apparitions”, in which Shaw played the lead role of a priest, Father Jacob [25] [26] [27] .
In the movie, Martin Shaw is rarely filmed. His most famous role is Banco in the 1971 film “ Macbeth ” by Roman Polanski [28] .
Among the actor's works are participation in the filming of various documentary films and sounding audio books, including Tolkien 's The Hobbit and Silmarillion , Swift 's Journey of Gulliver , and Thunderstorm Pass by Emily Bronte .
In December 2006, he became a member of a six-part show called “Martin Show: Aviators”, which was filmed in real time on Discovery Real Time [29] .
Personal and Social Life
In his youth, as a result of a drunken brawl, Shaw received a serious injury to his face with damage to the right zygomatic bone, which required surgical repair [30] .
From 1971, he became a follower of Charan Singh, the guru of the spiritual tradition of sant math : this meant applying lacto-vegetarian diets, meditation and yoga, giving up alcohol and other mind-altering drugs [31] [32] . The actor prefers to live in the countryside, in Norfolk [8] , and also owns a farm in Highland [33] .
Martin Shaw is an animal rights and welfare activist. He is a patron of the charitable organization Sanctuary Hillside (Norfolk), which provides a safe home for neglected animals and victims of cruel treatment [34] ; one of the patrons of the Born Free Foundation [35] . He also supports the Viva Animal Rights Society of Vegetarians! [36] .
In various interviews, Shaw readily shares her passion for vintage aircraft and aviation in general. Since 1991, he has been licensed as a private pilot. For several years, owned a biplane Stearman Boeing PT-17 Kaydet (G-BAVO) in 1945, now flies on the Piper J-3C-65 Cub (G-BFBY) [37] [38] [39] . From his youth drives a motorcycle [6] [33] .
Martin Shaw was married three times.
From the first wife, actress Jill Allen, whom he married in 1968 [40] , has three children who also chose an artistic career: two sons - Luke (born 1969) and Joe (born 1972), daughter - Sophie (born 1974). With his second son Joe, he starred together in Rhodes and Judge John Dide [41] . In the play “The Man for All Seasons” (2005–2006), where he played Thomas More , Sophie played the role of the daughter of his hero, Margaret [42] . The eldest son, Luke, participated with his father in the performances of “The Country Girl” (2010–2011) and “12 Angry Men” (2013–2014), and was also involved in “Judge Dide” [43] [44] .
With the second wife (married since 1982) [45] - Maggie Mansfield, nurse and alternative medicine doctor - Shaw divorced in 1992.
The third wife (married since 1996) - Vicky Kimm, TV presenter, environmental activist and pilot.
Since 2006, the media have reported that his fourth partner was Karen Da Silva, a yoga teacher [40] [46] .
On tour in Shrewsbury on August 18, 2010, Martin Shaw experienced a collapse (due to a complication of an infectious disease) during the performance of the first act of The Country Girl. After a few days, he fully recovered [47] [48] [49] .
In the eleventh season of the documentary series “ Family Tree ” (episode of September 18, 2014), the roots of the Shaw family from the side of the father’s line were investigated [50] .
