Biography
He was a consul in China, the first of the Europeans penetrated from Shanghai by dry way into Burma . On January 15, 1875, at Bhamo on the Irrawaddy, he met with a detachment of Brown, went in front of him, but near Manwein, in Yunnan , was treacherously slain. His diary was published under the title “Notes of a journey from Hankow to Ta-li-fu” (Shanghai, 1875).
