Life and work
Theodore Galle was the son of the artist and engraver Philip Galle and the brother of the graphic artist Cornelius Galle . He received an art education in the workshop of his father. Then he studied in Rome, where he copied the monuments of the art of antiquity. Returning to his homeland, he published his Roman works in the album Imagines ex antiquis marmoribus, numismatibus et gemmis expressae ( Impressions of Antique Marbles, Coins, and Gems ). In Antwerp, the artist, in addition to practicing art, was engaged in the sale of copper engraving. T. Galle was famous for his graphic works on the plots of paintings by P.P. Rubens. He also released an album of his own engravings on the life of St. Virgin called "Speculum illustrium virginum".
