Origin

In 779 BC e. King of Corinth Telest was killed by relatives. After this, it was not the kings who began to rule Corinth, but the pritanes . In 747 BC e. (traditional date) as a result of the coup, the Bukhid clan monopolized power.

The Bakhid family was over 200 people. According to Herodotus [1] , they ruled the city together. Getting married only with representatives of a kind [2] . All the Bakhadiads were descended from the seven sons of the legendary ruler Bakhis / Bakhid, one of the descendants of Heracles, who ruled Corinth in 958-923 BC. e. According to some researchers, the clan was ruled by the descendants of King Telest. But the authors emphasize that among other Bakkhiads these descendants had no advantages.

Corinth Management

Researchers suggest (drawing an analogy with other ancient Greek cities) that in Corinth there was a council of the Bakkhiads, who ruled the city and the okrug.

The authors convey the title of the head of Corinth and its meaning in different ways:

  • pritan - since he ruled for one year.
  • "Basileuvw", that is, the king - as Diodorus and Nikolai Damask use this term, wanting to emphasize the breadth of the borders of power of the ruler during this year.
  • tyrant (sometimes referred to).

Bakhtiads also chose the polemarch . He led the military forces of the state. In addition, the Corinthian polemarch was endowed with some police and fiscal powers.

Under the Bahdiads, Corinth was divided into phyla : three Dorian fila (suggesting that they were called Gillei, Pamfily and Dimany) and the Nedorian fila Aoreev.

When the Bahdiads began to develop crafts (ceramics), they patronized trade by sea and through Istm. When they began the creation of Corinthian colonies.

Expansion and Fall

When they began a conflict with the colonists of Kerkyra . In 664 BC e. the first naval battle took place between the Corinthians and their Corfu colonists.

Also under the Bakhadiad, Corinth again managed to expand its power over Megara. According to Bervay, the loss of Megara and failure with Kerkyra exacerbated social relations in Corinth. Dissatisfied, united around Kipsel, overthrew the Bakkhtiads in 657.

After Kipsel’s coup, most of the Bakkhiads were forced to leave Corinth for exile. Their possessions were confiscated. Some of them settled in Kerkyra, others went to Sparta , Macedonia , Kavnos . But Bakhiad Demarat , according to legend, settled in Etruria , where he married a noblewoman from Tarquinia . One of his sons, Tarquinius Priscus , became the fifth king of Rome .

  2. ↑ Researchers believe that only in the VII century. BC e., trying to relieve social tension and expand support, the Bakhadiads began to violate this marriage custom.
