Hawk, Frederick Hamilton

Frederick Hamilton “Rick” Hauck ( born Frederick Hamilton “Rick” Hauck ; born April 11, 1941 , Long Beach ) is a NASA astronaut . He made three space flights: as a pilot on the Challenger shuttle - STS-7 (1983) and twice as a crew commander on the Discovery shuttle - STS-51A (1984) and STS-26 (1988), the US Navy captain .

Born April 11, 1941 in Long Beach , California , but his homeland is the city of Winchester , Massachusetts and Washington (DC) . In 1958, he graduated from St. Alban's Higher School in Washington. In 1962 he graduated from Tufts University and received a bachelor of science degree in physics . In 1966, he received a Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [1] .

Military career

In 1962, he was called up for service in the US Navy and sent to the USS Warrington (DD-843) aircraft carrier , where for 20 months he served as the commander of the military communications unit and the head of the combat information center. In 1964, in the Graduate School of the United States Navy in the city of Monterey, he received additional training in mathematics and physics , and in 1965 he studied Russian for some time at the Institute of Foreign Languages ​​of the Department of Defense. In 1966, he was sent to initial flight training at the Pensacola Air Base in Florida , and after qualifying as a U.S. Navy pilot in 1968, he was sent for retraining on an A-6 aircraft at Oceania Air Base in Virginia. He served in the 35th assault squadron in the 15th air wing, took part in a campaign in the western part of the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) aircraft carrier, and completed 114 sorties. Since August 1970, he served as part of the 42nd assault squadron as an armament instructor. In 1971, he completed training at the School of Test Pilots of the US Navy at the Patuxent River Air Force Base in Maryland . Then for 3 years he served in the Naval Flight Test Center and was a leading test pilot in testing automatic landing systems for the A-6 Intruder , A-7 Corsair II , F-4 Phantom and F-14 Tomcat aircraft . In 1974, he was appointed Chief of Operations at the 14th air wing on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier (CVN-65) . He flew on the A-6, A-7 and F-14 aircraft, participated in flights with landing on an aircraft carrier at night. After a short-term service in the 128th assault squadron in February 1977, he was assigned to serve as senior assistant commander in the 145th assault squadron. The total flight time is 5,500 hours. He retired on June 1, 1990, with the rank of captain (captain I rank of the Navy) [2] .

Space Training

January 16, 1978 he was enrolled in the NASA astronaut squad during the 8th set . Upon completion of the course of general space training (OKP) in August 1979, he was enrolled in the Department of Astronauts as a shuttle pilot. He was a member of the STS-1 and STS-2 support crew , and was a communications operator with the crew during the STS-2 flight.

Spaceflight

  • The third flight - STS-26 [7] , the Shuttle Discovery . From September 29 to October 3, 1988 as a shuttle commander. The flight duration was 4 days 1 hour 1 minute [8] .

The total duration of space flights is 18 days 3 hours 12 minutes. He left the astronaut squad on April 3, 1989.

After flying

After leaving the astronaut corps, he served in the Ministry of the Navy as chief of the space systems of the Navy. In 2005, became a member of the NASA Advisory Board.

Has awards: Ministry of Defense Medal “For Outstanding Service” (USA) , three times Medal “For Space Flight” (1983, 1984 and 1988), Medal “For Excellent Service” (USA) , Order “Legion of Honor” , Cross of Merit of Merit ( USA) , nine Air medals (USA) , Medal for Outstanding Service (NASA) , Gold Medal named after Yu. A. Gagarin of the International Aviation Federation , Diploma named after V. M. Komarov of the International Aviation Federation , his name is included in the Hall of Fame of astronauts .

Family

Wife - Dolly Bowman. Daughter - Whitney Hawk Wood (b. 03/06/1963), son - Stephen Christopher Hauk (b. 12/17/1964), naval officer. Hobbies: skiing, sailing, restoration of old cars.
