Preparing Germans for Defense
On the eve of the return of the 4th Krajin division from Dalmatia , which defended Split, the 5th Krajin army corps of the NOAU took the initiative and began to prepare the offensive in Western Bosnia. To defend the territory from the Yugoslavs, on the orders of the command of the 15th Mountain Army Corps, soldiers of the 373rd Infantry Division and volunteers from the 3rd Mountain Infantry Division were sent. They had to take Banja Luka, Priedor and some other communications. At the same time, Sanski Bridge remained unprotected.
Assault
To storm the city, the Yugoslavs gathered the 6th and 8th Krai brigades from the 4th division, as well as the 8th and 13th Krai brigades from the 10th division. Assistance was also provided by the Sansky and Podgremechsky detachments, as well as the shock battalion of the Drvar detachment.
On the night of October 20-21, 1943, troops delivered an unexpected blow to the German garrison, plunging his soldiers into a panic. The Germans, who did not expect a strike on Sanski Most, were so frightened that they could not show any resistance, and the Croatian troops fled the battlefield without even trying to help the Germans. A few hours after the start of the battle, the city was in the hands of Yugoslav soldiers.
Losses
According to the report of the headquarters of the 5th Krai’s corps, the Yugoslav troops lost only 5 killed and 12 wounded soldiers of the 4th division, while the Germans lost 70 people killed and about 1,100 wounded and captured (including 28 officers). The partisans got rich prey: 906 guns and howitzers, 5 heavy howitzers, 66 machine guns, 6 heavy machine guns and three whole supply wagons [1] . According to German data, about 1,000 people were killed and wounded from the garrison, and the partisans only got five artillery pieces [2] .
Consequences
The second attempt to take the city of Sanski Most was finally successful for the partisans, which stabilized the situation in Western Bosnia and created a bridgehead for further attacks on Priedor and Banja Luka (which, however, were not organized during the year; only in December the Yugoslavs attempted to infiltrate the city). From June 30 to July 2, 1944 , the Second Meeting of the Anti-Fascist Council for the Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held in the city.
