MathSoft was founded in 1984 by Allen Razdow and David Blohm to provide students, teachers, and professionals with math programs. The company became famous thanks to the development of the Mathcad program, a powerful application for solving and visualizing mathematical problems. The company also created StudyWorks , a series of mathematical and scientific educational packages designed to educate schoolchildren and students in relevant mathematical disciplines.

Mathsoft Engineering and Education, Inc. , the company that sells these software products was a division of MathSoft. In 2001, MathSoft sold its Engineering and Educational Products divisions to separate managers as independent private companies. One of MathSoft's former divisions, FreeScholarships.com, was closed, and MathSoft renamed it Insightful. Insightful develops custom math software for businesses and sells StatServer, a statistical analysis software package. Mathsoft Engineering & Education continues to develop and market its flagship product, Mathcad, as well as the Mathcad Calculation Server, an enterprise server for the separation of technical computing.

Mathsoft Engineering & Education, Inc. promotes the term calculation management , which includes the development, documentation and management of technical computing and intellectual property.
