Biography
The early years
Born in Carchelton County in the south of London [4] . Father is Spaniard, mother is English. She spent her childhood in Wallington, where she studied at Wallington Girls' School [5] . She studied at St. Mary's University College in Twickenham from 2002 to 2006, graduating from college with a degree in Marketing Communications . In college, she was engaged in both rowing and cycling (and she has been involved in the latter since two years).
Rowing
Rebecca studied rowing in college. In 2004, she made her debut at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, winning silver medals in the national team in the competition of doubles, losing only to Germans. A year later, she won the world championship in Japanese Gifu in the same category. Due to persistent back problems, Romero left rowing in 2006 [6] .
Cycling
Rebecca soon switched to cycling and achieved significant success. In December 2006, the UCI World Cup was held in Moscow, where Romero participated in the pursuit. Rebecca became the silver medalist, skipping forward compatriot Wendy Hoovenagel. In March 2007, she won the first medal of the World Championships in Palma de Mallorca, and again it was “silver” (3 km pursuit) [7] ; a year later, the athlete immediately won two gold medals in the individual and team pursuit at the home championship in Manchester. Partners on the national team were the same Wendy Huvenagen and Joanna Rosell.
2008 Olympics
In 2008, Romero reappeared at the Olympics, becoming the first British Olympic sportswoman in several sports, and her victory in the pursuit race in Beijing still allowed her to become the second medalist of the Summer Olympics to win medals in several sports (the first was Rozvita Krause from East Germany , a swimmer and handball player) [8] [9] . For this success , December 31, 2008, Rebecca was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) [10] . In honor of the cyclist was even named subway station in London [11] .
August 17, 2008 Rebecca starred naked in an advertising photo shoot of Powerade energy drinks company as part of the Olympic advertising series [12] . In addition to her, the jumper Filip Idova and swimmer Gregor Tate also starred in the photo shoot [13] .
After the Olympics
In October 2009, Romero was going to return to track cycling, but rumors that the individual race will be excluded from the Olympic program forced her to abandon this idea [14] . In the end, in December 2009, the race was expelled from the program, and thus Rebecca Romero became the last champion in the pursuit. However, she decided to switch to road cycling [15] .
In August 2009, she took part in the Lands End cycling marathon - John O'Groths in tandem with James Cracknell, but retired halfway due to a knee injury [16] .
After a series of failures in October 2011, Rebecca withdrew from the qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympics, refusing to participate in the home Olympic Games [17] [18] . However, she promised to take part in triathlon competitions in Mallorca and Bolton [19] .
